CHRONIC DERMATOSES AND OBESITY: COMORBIDITY ISSUES

Abstract

The theses analyze the clinical and pathophysiological interrelation between chronic dermatoses (CD) and obesity as an example of comorbid pathology. It has been established that obesity aggravates the course of skin diseases due to enhanced systemic inflammation, metabolic and immune dysfunctions. During 2023–2024, a clinical evaluation of 1,348 patients with chronic skin diseases was conducted at the university clinic. Among them, 249 (18.5%) were diagnosed with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²), including 145 women (58.2%) and 104 men (41.8%). The most common diagnoses in this subgroup included psoriasis (32.1%), atopic dermatitis (26.1%), chronic urticaria (14.9%), eczema (12%), and seborrheic dermatitis (8%). Patients with obesity had more severe disease courses and a higher prevalence of anxiety (42%) and depressive (38%) disorders. Women primarily showed restrictive eating behaviors, while men tended to display external eating patterns. A multidisciplinary approach involving dermatologists, psychotherapists, and dietitians is necessary. Lifestyle modification and psychological support programs can improve both dermatological and metabolic health outcomes.
